Why Koh Samui?

An easy tropical island with a different beach for every traveller

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Surat Thani province. A ring road of about 50 km circles a mountainous, jungle-covered interior, linking beaches that feel quite different from one another — busy Chaweng, relaxed Lamai, boutique Bophut, quiet Maenam and the sunset coast in the west.

It has its own airport, good hospitals, hotels from hostels to some of Asia’s best resorts, and a dry season that runs when Phuket and Krabi are at their wettest. Offshore lie Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. This guide covers all of it — independent, regularly updated and written to help you choose.

Koh Samui: Mu Ko Ang Thong Park Cruise with Kayaking Option

The classic, good-value way to see Ang Thong. A big boat is slower than a speedboat but far steadier, with room to move about and shade on deck — a real advantage for families and anyone prone to seasickness. Kayaking is offered as an add-on, so check which option you are booking.

Samui: Angthong National Marine Park Day Trip by Speedboat

The speedboat version of the Ang Thong day: a quicker crossing and a slightly shorter day than the big boats, at a higher price. Speedboats ride hard when the sea is choppy, so they are not ideal for bad backs, pregnancy or very young children.

  • Faster crossing means more time in the park
  • Snorkelling, the Emerald Lake and the Ko Wua Talap viewpoint
  • Well over a thousand reviews

From Samui: Ko Tao and Koh Nang Yuan Speedboat Day Trip

Visiting Koh Samui: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?

February to April is the driest and sunniest period, and the weather is generally good from January right through to September. The main rainy season is October to mid-December, with November usually the wettest month — the opposite of Phuket and the Andaman coast. See best time to visit.

How do you get to Koh Samui?

Either fly directly to Samui Airport (USM), which is quick but relatively expensive, or fly to Surat Thani or Nakhon Si Thammarat on a low-cost airline and continue by bus and ferry, which is cheaper but takes several hours longer. Full details in our getting here guide.

Which beach should I stay on?

Chaweng for nightlife and the widest choice, Lamai for a calmer resort town, Bophut and Fisherman’s Village for boutique hotels and restaurants, Maenam and the west coast for peace and quiet, Choeng Mon for families. Our where to stay guide compares them.

How many days do I need on Koh Samui?

Five to seven nights is a good first visit: enough for a couple of beach days, an island sightseeing loop, a day in Ang Thong and one other boat trip. With ten days or more, add a few nights on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao.

Is it safe to rent a scooter on Koh Samui?

Road accidents are the biggest risk to visitors. You legally need a motorcycle licence valid in Thailand, and most travel insurance will not pay out without one. If you are not an experienced rider, use songthaews, taxis, ride-hailing apps or tours instead. More in the travel guide.

What are the must-do day trips?

Ang Thong National Marine Park is the classic. After that, choose between snorkelling at Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, a half-day at Pig Island and a 4WD safari into the hills. See our ranked list.
